235 Women and Power with Elizabeth Lesser
Good morning well woman community… As our country tries to pull through from the last few days, it’s more important than ever to hold people accountable for inciting violence and enabling unlawful behavior. It’s unAmerican, unethical and unacceptable. Some leaders are distancing themselves now, but it’s too little too late. Now is when we need more compassion and collaboration in places of power. The topic for today – women and power – is more relevant and important than ever.
We’re going to talk about power all month long. This week, we start with talking to Elizabeth Lesser, the author of several bestselling books, including Cassandra Speaks: When Women are the Storytellers, the Human Story Changes; Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow and Marrow: Love, Loss & What Matters Most. She is the co-founder of Omega Institute, recognized internationally for its workshops and conferences in wellness, spirituality, creativity, and social change. She has given two popular TED talks, and is one of Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul 100, a collection of a hundred leaders who are using their voices and talent to elevate humanity.
We discuss:
Why the word power make us so uncomfortable,
How culture is built on storytelling
How our emotions are a form of intelligence
and the catch 22 of women’s power

234 Just Giovanna: Release and Power Up
What if you could do away with New Year’s Resolutions once and for all and instead release 2020 and power up for 2021?
On the show this week, we’ll reflect on 2020 and release those things that we don’t want to carry with us into the new year. We’ll reframe our story to reconnect with our power. And we’ll take all of this to power up for 2021.

232: History in the Making with Biden’s Pick for Interior Dept., Congresswoman Deb Haaland
President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team on Thursday announced New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland as his nominee for interior secretary, a powerful federal position that oversees natural resources, public lands, and Indian affairs. If confirmed by the Senate, Haaland, from the Pueblo of Laguna, would be the first Native American Cabinet secretary. Haaland was re-elected to her second term representing New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District in November and is currently the vice-chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources. She’s been working to organize rural and tribal communities for years, including in her role as Democratic Party chair of New Mexico.
As the world learns more about Congresswoman Deb Haaland who is President-elect Biden’s pick for Department of the Interior, I went into the archives of this show to replay my interview with Deb in 2016, when she was the first Native American state party chair as chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.
In a statement, the Biden-Harris transition team called Haaland a “barrier-breaking public servant who has spent her career fighting for families, including in Tribal Nations, rural communities, and communities of color,” who will be “ready on day one to protect our environment and fight for a clean energy future.”
In this interview from 2016, Cong. Haaland talks about:
- The most powerful moment she experienced with Michelle Obama
- How she felt the night she nominated Hilary Clinton at the democratic convention in 2016
- Her commitment to advocating for women, need for strong families and equal pay
- The importance of diversity in politics and women’s participation in
- politics
- The three key things Congresswomen Haaland does to stay healthy and
- be successful
