For most of us, a trip to the doctor is an assessment of our physical health. If our blood pressure is normal and our diet healthy, we should be fine. But the fact is that while many of us have physically healthy lifestyles, as a society our overall health is declining. In light of this phenomenon, scientists are beginning to suggest that we should be going to the doctor not just to assess our physical health, but our mental and emotional health as well.
More and more weight is being put into the idea of a mind-body connection. If there is something askew in our emotional state, such as stress from work, and we don’t acknowledge it (perhaps because we feel we can’t take a break from work), then it manifests physically. Taking drugs to fix the physical symptoms will not make the issue go away, only dealing with the emotional root cause will.
Today I have the unique opportunity to speak with an integrative medicine Osteopathic Doctor who encourages patients to use what we usually view as alternative medicines; acupuncture, massage, and her specialty, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or tapping, to address some of their health concerns. Dr. Lori Eanes is an Osteopathic doctor, an instructor with Food For Life, an EFT practitioner, and featured spokesperson on KASA Fox TV. Dr. Lori has also designed a cooking class, Let Your Food Be Your Medicine, where she teaches the healing power of foods and she hosts an annual Retreat to Wellness in destination locations. Today I speak with Dr. Lori about achieving emotional wellbeing for physical health, the mind-body connection and how to nurture it for optimal health, and creating balance, and the ‘wake-up call’ that made her realize she needed to slow down.

More About Dr. Lori
Dr. Lori has years of experience working with people with recurring health issues, such as stomachaches and digestive issues. After years of seeing the same problems and seeing that medicating them wasn’t helping, she came to understand that for many people the health issues are not merely skin deep. In some cases, our physical ailments are a manifestation of emotional unrest. We choose to ignore our emotional issues and “when your brain isn’t lining up with your body, your body takes over. That’s when you start to notice a symptom of some kind.” As a result, dealing with the symptoms doesn’t fix the real problem.
Dr. Lori understands this cycle well, as she has experienced it herself. At one point in her career she was seeing one hundred patients a day. She began to develop digestive issues, and couldn’t figure out what was causing them. After more than one professional suggested the digestive problems were a manifestation of her emotional distress, she took steps to reduce her workload, and the problems went away.
Dr. Lori admits that often the hardest part of this healthcare approach is getting patients to actually look deeply and deal with their emotional issues. It seems easier to ignore them, but this attitude must be changed, as “you can’t fix what you won’t face.”
