029 Finding Success in Juggling Roles with Jill Brown

We all have more than one focus in our lives. Each one is important in its own way, and the reality is we can’t put all of them first. Career, family, romance, spirituality ; it’s a constant juggling act. We can’t be successful in every aspect of our lives at the same time, and this fact can feel defeating. According to MyLandscapeCoach.com founder Jill Brown, perhaps it’s the juggling itself that should be the goal.

As a business owner, blogger, wife, mother of three, and active member in her community, Jill knows a thing or two about juggling. Jill is an Albuquerque-based landscape architect who provides landscape coaching to homeowners, both virtually and in-person. She is a licensed landscape architect, is certified in permaculture, and maintains a weekly blog with a landscape and gardening focus. Today Jill shares some of her landscape and gardening secrets and we discuss some of the time-saving tips she utilizes to maintain that juggling act.

More About Jill

Jill worked as an employee of a landscape architecture firm for eleven years before taking the leap and opening her own business. While she has known since childhood that she wanted to work in landscape architecture (her father was a landscape architect), she “told everyone I knew that I would never own my own business.” She had always envisioned herself working for a firm, never taking on the responsibilities that business ownership requires. The decision came when she was pregnant with her third child and the notion of working for someone else, even part-time, seemed impossible with three children at home and a husband who worked full-time.

Jill didn’t open her business, MyLandscapeCoach.com, only out of necessity. She realized that she had the strength and skills to run her own business based on her relationships with her clients. Her clients were contacting her for work and advice long before she considered starting the business, which led her to understand that “they must believe that I’m capable enough to do the work by myself.”

In talking with friends and family about the new venture, Jill discovered something else. Many people wanted more than just landscape design; they wanted personal input and suggestions, something only Jill could do. She soon began to adjust her business model to create a landscape coaching component, which allows her to provide specific, thoughtful support to any type of client. Today Jill provides landscape architecture design, coaching, and tips and suggestions on her weekly blog.

With so many projects on her plate, plus the responsibilities of motherhood, Jill has set some important processes in place to make sure she can maintain the ‘juggling act.’ One of her biggest timesavers is setting routines for her family life, such as scheduled breakfasts and chore charts for her children. She explains that these steps allow her to “make less decisions, so the decisions throughout the day that I’m making are business decisions.”

026: Conquering Fear with Fernanda Santos

In American media, there are stigmas associated with certain professions. Nurses are traditionally portrayed as women, firefighters are traditionally depicted as men, and reporters are native English speakers. For reporter Fernanda Santos, none of the usual stigmas ring true. As a Brazilian born reporter, Fernanda moved to the US when she was twenty-five to pursue writing. Eighteen years later, she is a staff writer for the New York Times, and has recently come out with a book about the lives, networks, and experiences of the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

Fernanda will assure you, her untraditional decisions were not easy ones to make. She has faced many times of dread, self-doubt, and questioning as she’s moved forward in her career as a journalist. Today I speak with Fernanda about the obstacles she had to overcome to get where she is today, how she came to use fear as a motivating tool rather than a ‘trap,’ and why her unique perspective is so useful in telling the stories of the fallen firefighters.

More About Fernanda

Fernanda moved to the US from Brazil to pursue journalism when she was twenty-five. Growing up, her father had always told her that as a woman, she could “do exactly what a man could do, and [she] can do it better if [she] wants.” For Fernanda, this meant pursuing her dreams of becoming a successful journalist, which she has achieved successfully.

In her most recent endeavor, recounting the lives of the nineteen Hotshot firefighters who perished in the Yarnell Hill Fire in Prescott, AZ, Fernanda met a lot of obstacles; externally and from within herself. The lives of firefighters are usually excluded to a male voice, but Fernanda sought to explore the story from a female perspective. By using her unique narrative style she created a side of the story that perhaps would never have been shown, including an emphasis on the families and loved ones of those involved.

Fernanda feels that in a way the fact that she is a woman allowed her to become closer to her subjects. The partners, wives, and mothers of the firefighters were able to connect with her in a way they may not have with someone else. Fernanda recalls feeling that “there was a sense of ‘you understand what I’m talking about,’” as Fernanda is also a wife and mother.

Despite years of success, Fernanda still finds herself having moments of self-doubt or fear that she isn’t good enough. She’s learned to deal with fear by accepting it as a necessary part of her creative process, rather than something to be pushed away. In this way, she is able to accept it, examine it, and move past it without it burdening her down.

What super power did you discover you had only to realize it was there all the time?

The ability to juggle ten things at a time.

What advice would you give to your 25 or 30 year old self?

You don’t have to be like other people.

More About Julia

Julia’s passion for creative expression began at a young age. When she attended college at Georgetown University, she felt called to write poetry and sought to be an English Major. In the 1960’s a literary career was not a traditional path for women, and Julia was met with barriers and discouragement again and again. When she wasn’t allowed to study English at the College of Arts and Sciences she started a women’s lib chapter at Georgetown. This movement ultimately led to Julia, along with seven other women, to be the first female graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1970.

This perseverance has been both a conscious and unconscious theme throughout Julia’s life and career. There have been many obstacles Julia has had to overcome throughout her career as a woman writer and artist, but she admits that the discipline is something innate within her; she can’t help it. She also can’t help from writing; she finds that she is irritable and on edge when she is not in the midst of a creative project.

I caught Julia at one of those ‘difficult places’ when she isn’t quite sure what the next project will be. While it is not a comfortable state, it is a crucial time in Julia’s creative process. When she has no projects on the forefront she dedicates herself to ‘prayer through writing.’ She writes to her muse seeking out help, in the form of her ritual morning journal writing, or morning pages, and listens to see what that response is. Julia finds that she is often resistant to whatever it is that comes up. She will allow herself procrastinate on acting, dwelling in anxiety for a few more days before doing what she knows she must and listening to her inner voice, an experience I think we can all relate to.

Julia’s most recent projects include a play and the completion of her newest book, It’s Never Too Late to Begin Again: Creativity at Midlife and Beyond, co-written with Emma Lively. This book introduces a fourth creative ritual into those described in previous books (morning pages, artist’s date, and weekly walk), that of memoir writing. While aimed at an audience in the retirement stage of life, the tools Julia describes can be used at any age.

What super power did you discover you had only to realize it was there all the time?

Perseverance.

What advice would you give to your 25 or 30 year old self?

Start writing morning pages.

017 Discover Your Worth with Kirsten Roberts

We’ve all heard it before: we need to put our own needs first before we care for those around us. Easier said than done! For many of us, putting our own needs first seems implausible. There are children to be fed, a house to clean, work assignments to finish. All of these things need to be done and they all need to be done now. We know that our personal care has to fit in there somewhere, but where?

According to Kirsten Roberts, when you “sacrifice yourself, you’re never going to be the best person you can be for the ones you love.” Perhaps if we change our perception about our personal needs then we will begin to put ourselves first. Although this is a roundabout way of thinking about self-care, for some women this may be the best way to get them to actually begin prioritizing themselves.

As a former do-all-er, Kirsten understands that sometimes it’s a perspective shift that gets a woman to change her behavior and discover the joy she’s been missing. In today’s episode I speak with Kirsten Roberts, founder of Radical Life, a program that helps women “build their wildly fulfilling business, learn the art of crazy self-love and live with uproarious laughter every day.”  Kirsten was named one of Smart Company’s Top 50 Female Entrepreneurs in Australia, was CEO and co-owner of the franchised food group Spudbar and built a consulting arm for the accounting firm Crowe Horwarth where she signed $7m worth of contracts in the first two years of operation. Today I talk with Kirsten about self-love, finding laughter everyday, and breaking free from the anxiety cycle.

More About Kirsten

Kirsten comes from a history of business success. She’s always been the type to succeed in whatever she put her mind to, but after reaching her professional goals she found herself in a tough spot. She wasn’t happy, she was constantly comparing herself to others, and she didn’t know what to do next.

After a series of particularly difficult events, Kirsten sought help from a life coach. She would be the first to tell you that even those who seem to have everything together can benefit from some guidance and mentorship. She realized that she was living in a constant state of anxiety, “living life braced” for the next failure or meltdown and never simply appreciating day-to-day joys. Kirsten decided to adjust her perception of life, beginning with small steps such as daily affirmations, to bigger ones such as health and diet changes.

While Kirsten seeks to each day create “uproarious laughter” in her life, she also acknowledges the importance of accepting the dark periods in our lives. If you think of joy as a candle, “we can’t see the gorgeous flicker and the warmth of the candle unless there’s a dark contrast.” Rather than drown out our emotions with distractions; TV, alcohol, food; she recommends we welcome the dark times, take the lessons they give us, and move on when the time is right. After you are out of the darkness, it will be hard not to be teeming with wild fulfillment!

Getting up early and meditating every morning.

The journey creates who you are, so don’t beat yourself up on the journey.

Leisa achieved a goal that many of us dream of: she was a self-made millionaire by her mid-thirties. She has always been a go-getter, never content to wait around for success to come to her. However, when she reached her financial goals there was no sigh of relief or sense of celebration. Instead, all she felt was a need to hold onto her money and a fear of losing it. This experience revealed to her that part of her motivation to attain wealth came from a desire to find self-worth. It was then that Leisa realized that she needed to change her mindset, focus on her relationship with herself, and make a career change.   Prior to starting WealthClinic, Leisa worked in finance for twenty-two years. Following a family tragedy in 1999 she turned toward spiritual guidance through meditation and mindfulness. Today Leisa works from her heart and uses her intuition to make genuine connections with her clients. She works with established and new entrepreneurs alike, and helps them to align their personal beliefs with their financial goals to get more out of their lives and businesses. Leisa comes from the perspective that we can’t just fix one part of our lives, we need to seek out balance in every area in order to have fulfillment. She works with her clients to find their strengths, weaknesses, and make a plan to bring them all into alignment.

 

Leisa’s personal journey includes a deep relationship with self, something she realized she needed to develop if she were to help others. Self-acceptance is a huge part of the self-work that Leisa has undergone, and she emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance to her clients in her consulting work. Without self-acceptance we are constantly in a state of self-doubt and life with a scarcity mentality: fearful that we will lose what we have instead of enjoying our lives. When we live mindfully and with self-acceptance, Leisa explains, we can find wealth in every facet of our lives.
